Frame the question precisely

Write down the client fact pattern before searching for an answer. Include the nature of income or payment, taxpayer context and relevant period. A search result can look relevant while answering a different question.

Distinguish the publication date of guidance from the date the underlying rule takes effect. An announcement published today may concern an earlier period or a future transition.

Use a source log

Keep a short source log with the official URL, document identifier where available, date checked and period addressed. Save the relevant reasoning in your working paper without treating a snippet or article headline as the complete rule.

  • Check whether the source is official and complete.
  • Read the scope, exceptions and effective-date provisions.
  • Look for amendments or later clarification.
  • Document why the source applies to this client's facts.

Make uncertainty visible

If more than one interpretation appears possible, record the uncertainty and escalate it for review. Avoid hiding an unresolved legal question inside an arithmetic calculation.

The official Income Tax Department portal is a useful starting point for current guidance. This article does not state current thresholds or statutory section mappings; those require period-specific verification against authoritative material.

A useful research note ends with the question asked, the facts assumed, the sources examined and the conclusion approved. If a fact later changes, that structure helps the team identify which part of the reasoning needs to be revisited before the calculation is used again. Keep unresolved factual assumptions separate from verified records.
