Define the taxpayer and relevant period
Start with the taxpayer's identity, nature of activity and the period under review. Record the source of those details. Avoid assuming that the same form, legal terminology or treatment applies across different periods.
Organise the books and supporting information by income source and record type. Bank records, invoices, investment statements and prior communications may help explain entries, but the scope depends on the taxpayer's actual circumstances.
Compare rather than copy
Where official information statements are obtained, compare them with the taxpayer's source records. An apparent difference may involve timing, duplication or a record requiring clarification. Investigate the difference rather than automatically replacing the books with a portal figure.
Keep a working-paper table with the source amount, book amount, difference, explanation and evidence still needed. This makes follow-up more precise and reduces the chance of an unresolved issue being lost in email.
Verify current requirements separately
Use the Income Tax Department's official portal and relevant current legal material to verify applicable forms, filing requirements and deadlines. Record the period to which each source applies and when it was checked.
This guide gives an organisational method, not a filing determination or personalised tax advice. Do not infer a current rate, deduction, exemption or deadline from it. A responsible professional must assess the facts and applicable law before filing.
